- W2081301697 abstract "Nineteen patients were studied in an attempt to correlate clinical data with the EEG findings and the results of the “Drawing-a-person test” of Goodenough (DPT). The duration of the observations extended over 3 years in some cases, the EEG and DPT being repeated on several occasions. It was observed that the lowest IQ's were found in those patients with consistent bursts of slow and sharp waves or wave- and -spike discharges in the EEG, independent of the clinical severity of the fits. These patients gave a family history of disease of the nervous system and the possibility is discussed that their centrencephalic structures were predisposed to producing such discharges as a result of the effects of various natural pathogens (infection, hypoxia, trauma or metabolic disorder), since in the majority of other patients with a similar history of past brain pathology, but without positive family history, the EEG abnormalities were different and the intellectual deficit less. Further we found that there was a variation either up or down in the IQ as determined by the DPT without any correlation with the evolution in or modification of the EEG. We consider this to be related to variations in the emotional state and mention this as an important factor in influencing the DPT result as well as aggravating the clinical state and the EEG. In the group with IQ's between 70 and 90 it was noted that the right temporal lobe was more disturbed than the left in the majority of the children, that is to say the minor hemisphere in the traditional sense, since all the children were right-handed. We have indicated the possibility that hemispheric dominance in the child is relative in respect to intellectual functions, since whichever hemisphere is damaged global disturbances of function are produced which are related to the incomplete state of maturation. Although the group studied is small, the results agree with those of larger series in showing the frequency of EEG abnormalities in epileptic children and in stressing the importance of taking into account the psychological state of these patients, particularly in those showing slow and sharp wave or spike-and-wave discharges." @default.
