Two of these methods, one based on the use of dissolution data and the other on the variation of growth rate with solution velocity, are applied to previously published potash alum growth data and give generally consistent results. For two crystal growth models, the step model (BCF) and the nuclei model (NaN), the optimum distribution of experimental points required both to ensure the maximum possible accuracy of the derived parameters in the growth equations and to discriminate between the two models, are investigated. It is shown that even under the most favourable conditions, measured values of the parameters σc and B in the above models are unlikely to be accurate to better than a factor of 2.
