- W2081567772 abstract "Abstract The occurence of kinetic oscillations in the oxidation of CO on a Pt(110) surface is linked to the 1 × 1 ↔ 1 × 2 phase transformation of the surface structure and may be superimposed by the formation of microfacets which was described in a preceding paper. Depending on the choice of the control parameters the degree of facetting was found to vary between a predominantly flat (110) surface and a strongly facetted surface with facets belonging to the [001] zone of e.g. (320) and (210) orientation. As the surface becomes facetted the oscillatory behavior changes significantly, the existence region for oscillations is shifted and in general an increase in the period length and amplitude is observed. In situ LEED observations also showed that the oscillations in the reaction rate are accompanied by periodic changes in the degree of facetting. This is consistent with previous results which showed that the catalytic activity of a Pt(110) surface under conditions of high pCO is strongly increased by facetting. A simple mechanism for the kinetic oscillations is presented in which two opposing processes, the facet formation on a CO-covered 1 × 1 surface and the removal of facets by a thermal reordering process are causing kinetic oscillations through periodic changes in the surface structure." @default.
