In particular, the rate of the dihydroquinoline reduction of N-(2-pyridylmethylene)-2-pyridylmethylamine was augmented by more than 200-fold, compared with that in the absence of metal ions. On the other hand, the reduction of benzil, ethyl benzoylformate, and trifluoroacetophenone was not subject to the metal catalysis. The enhanced reactivity is accounted for by the affinity of Schiff bases toward metal ions. The efficiency of the metal catalysis was compared with that of the proton catalysis. This is the first example of the systematic examination of the metal catalysis in aqueous systems." @default.
