- W2081640879 abstract "This study presents the results of two experiments that test whether students' judgments about the acceptability of questionable actions are affected by the order in which ethical arguments are presented in the classroom. When ethical arguments are presented sequentially in a group setting, prior research suggests a primacy effect; where the first behavior pattern observed by group members sets the expected behavior of the group's members (Feldman, D. C., 1984, Academy of Management Review, 9 , 47–53). In contrast, however, recent cognitive psychology research (e.g., Ashton, A. H., & Ashton, R. H., 1990, Organizational Behaviour and Human Decision Processes, 46 , 1–19; Pei, B. K. W., Reckers, P. M. J., & Wyndelts, R. W., 1992, Decision Sciences, 23 , 175–199) has shown that accountants are prone to recency effects; where the most recent information is given more weight than information presented earlier. Results of the two experiments support the existence of recency effects for students majoring in accounting, but failed to support either a primacy or recency effect for non-accounting majors. This suggests that students majoring in accounting process information about ethical scenarios differently than non-accounting students." @default.
