- W2081893689 abstract "In Sweden the recommended immunization schedule for polio vaccination has consisted of four doses of killed vaccine given at the age of 9, 10 and 18 months and 6 years of age. The schedule was established from experiences from a trial in 1960 where it was shown that maternal antibodies interfered with the immunization when vaccination was begun at the age of 3 months. In 1960 no comparison was made between the studied 3-months-old group and children vaccinated at 9 months of age. The trial was repeated in 1967 and 1973. The vaccine potency as measured by the guinea-pig test was approximately 10 times higher than in 1960 and a control group of older vaccinees was included. The stronger vaccines appeared to overcome the threshold of maternal antibodies and the final result after the booster injection was fairly similar in children starting their vaccination at 3–4 months of age and children not vaccinated until 9 months of age. Over 90% of the children, whether younger or older reached titre levels ≥ 1:250 after the booster injection. About 20% more children attained the high titres ≥ 1:1250 among the 9-months-old vaccinees compared with the 3 months old. No correlation between high levels of maternal antibodies and poor booster response was observed." @default.
