- W2081974469 abstract "Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image size Notes These reflections were written from the perspective of the author alone, and other members of the Film Africa team may not share these views. A formal report of Film Africa exists and is available upon request. The idea behind these reflections was to take a deeper, critical look ‘behind the scenes’ of Film Africa. Too often the directors and curators of film festivals have to simply celebrate what they do, mostly for the purpose of securing good publicity and future funding. This piece has been written in the acknowledgement that, in the highly unregulated field of film festivals and events, open critique (and self-critique) is needed if we are to establish best practice in the area (see Dovey, forthcoming). Film Africa 2011's major funders were Miles Morland and The Sigrid Rausing Trust. The event was also sponsored by the Centre of African Studies, University of London; Renaissance Group; the Commonwealth Foundation; EcoBank; and Brand Communications. Its media partners were Community Channel and Afripop. Design was done by Lulu Kitolo and her team at Asilia Creative. Lindiwe Dovey and Namvula Rennie were co-directors; the PR&Marketing Manager was Nadia Denton; Chris Brown made the festival trailer; Basia Lewandowska was the Film Africa 2011 intern; Sebastiana Etzo was the volunteer manager, and the key volunteers were Eric Cooper, Regina Dundelova, Natasha Nkonde, and Helen Pik-Yan French. For more information on the 2011 event, and on future events, please see: http://www.filmafrica.org.uk. I elaborate on these ideas much more fully in my forthcoming book, Framing African Films: African Screen Media, Film Festivals, and the Global Film Scene. As we discovered through 70% of spectators identifying as ‘white’ on feedback forms at the 2008 London African Film Festival, a forerunner to Film Africa.
