- W2082061331 abstract "Scant attention has been paid to lesions and abnormalities of the xiphoid cartilage causing gastrointestinal symptoms. This is probably so because the xiphoid is seldom injured, and congenital or developmental abnormalities are seldom noted or looked for. The xiphoid process, the inferior portion of the sternum, juts down into the anterior abdominal wall in front of the liver and can be palpated in the floor of the depression known as the epigastric fossa, or the pit of the stomach. The process is usually flat and pointed but may be almost any shape. It consists of cartilage with a core of bone that enlarges with age. Trauma to the xiphoid is observed infrequently since the cartilage is sheltered in the subcostal angle and is usually more posterior than the body of the sternum; however, it may be contused or broken by a force applied against the anterior wall of the chest." @default.
