• W2082066746 abstract "Objectives: To describe the injuries observed following sagittal sectioning of postmortem cervical spines in 109 blunt trauma fatalities. Methods: Each spine was carefully removed from skull base to T1, fixed in formalin, deep frozen on dry ice and cut in 2.5 mm sagital slices on a specially adapted band saw. Sections were viewed using a dissecting microscope. Results: Spinal injuries were often secondary to head impacts, or to primary accelerations of the torso without head impact. One hundred and two [94%] of the spines spines showed injuries, more often to the inververtebral joints than to the vertebrae; the majority of the lesions were not visible on postmortem x-rays. The most frequently injured segments were C1-2, C5-6 and C6-7. In the sub-axial spine, disc and facet injuries were equally common. Spinal cord injuries were seen in 25% of the spines. Nerve root injuries are found in 14% of all the spines and in 33% of those surviving injury for more than two hours; vertebral artery were uncommon. Conclusion: The neck sprains observed at autopsy, could serve as a guide to the injuries which might be expected in severe whiplash. Most lesions are to the non-osseous tissues of the joints rather than to the vertebrae and ar enot readily demonstrable by current imaging techniques." @default.
