- W2082105536 abstract "555 The Self-Motivation Inventory (SMI) has been shown to be a predictor of exercise adherence. The original validation (Dishman & Ickes, Journal of Behavioral Medicine, 1981) of the SMI suggested that the scale was multidimensional. The purpose of this study was to define the psychometric dimensions of the SMI. The 40-item scale was administered to 1,653 college students enrolled in required physical fitness classes. Alpha factor analysis followed with orthogonal (varimax) and oblique (direct oblimin) rotations produced 8 factors that accounted for 49.1% of the total variance. The oblique solution showed that the factors were correlated and most closely fit the criterion for simple structure. The second order alpha factor analysis of the eight correlated factors yielded 3 orthogonal factors and accounted for 41.8% of the total variance. The remaining 2 orthogonal factors accounted for only 27.3% of the second order factor variance and could not be meaningfully interpreted. This showed that the SMI construct is represented by 6 correlated clusters including 35 of the 40 SMI items. The internal consistency reliability of the 35-item SMI was high, 0.88. The SMI construct was significantly correlated (r=0.26) with self-report level of physical activity which supports the use of the SMI in exercise settings." @default.
