The results showed that when the sliding velocity was greater than 3.00 m/sec, a 0.02 mm thick martensite layer was formed on the sliding surface, a phenomenon specific to the spheroidal graphite cast iron. It was not observed with the flake graphite cast iron. It was found that both the oxidative wear limit and stable wear limit of ferritic cast iron existed at a velocity and pressure higher than those of the bull's eye cast iron. Ferritic cast iron, however, was extremely prone to wear by an adhesion wear mechanism. An analysis of wear debris formed under conditions of mild wear showed that the iron oxide content changed from γ-Fe2O3 to α-Fe2O3 with increase in the sliding length." @default.
