- W2082312550 abstract "Reviewed by: Memento Nora Claire Gross Smibert, Angie. Memento Nora. Cavendish, 2011. 184p. ISBN 978-0-7614-5829-6 $16.99 R Gr. 8–10. In a near-future, security-obsessed America torn apart by the constant low-grade attacks of the Coalition, a sort of catch-all terrorist cooperative, a chemical therapy [End Page 392] has been developed to help people wipe particularly traumatic memories. As she prepares to undergo the process with her mother, Nora accidentally discovers her mother’s secret—Nora’s beloved father is an abusive husband—and decides to forgo the memory-wiping pill in order to remember the truth about her family. It’s just a small rebellion—as is the comic she and fellow memory rebel Micah make about their shared experience. The publication nonetheless lands them in hot water, they’re targeted by anti-terrorism forces and caught up in the currents of a government run by security corporations, a hyper-surveilled population whose chances in life are defined by their “security score,” and the increasingly credible conspiracy theory that someone at the top has taken the adage that “scared people are good citizen-consumers” way too far. Smibert’s consumption-and security-fueled dystopia fuses the politically charged projections of Anderson’s Feed (BCCB 11/02) and Doctorow’s Little Brother (BCCB 11/08) with the breathtakingly personal implications of selective amnesia, resulting in a multi-threaded plot that manages to be both complex and comfortably easy to follow (in other words, enjoyable for sci-fi fans and newbies alike). The fast pace encourages readers to fall headfirst into a gripping suspense-adventure ride, letting the thematic issues simmer beneath the surface while they are carried away on the surprise twists, memorable supporting characters, and interpersonal dynamics (including a romance) that are absorbing but never melodramatic. The teaser of Micah’s memory-suppressed but critical childhood experience is just one reason among many that readers will be eager for the promised sequel.
