- W2082362511 abstract "PURPOSE Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) may respond to dietary modification reducing the need for pharmacological agents. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of high dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) (fish oil) ingestion on pulmonary function and inflammatory markers in EIB subjects. METHODS Ten subjects with EIB and ten subjects without EIB (control) partipated in a randomized double-blind crossover study over 7-wks during which they recieved either fish oil capsules (3.2 g eicosapentaenoic acid and 2.2 g docohexaenoic acid) or placebo capsules (olive oil) taken daily for 3-wk. A 1-wk washout occurred between diets. Pulmonary function, urinary LTE4 and plasma levels of TNF-α, IL-1 β and LTB4 were assessed pre- and post-exercise challenge before and after 3-wk on a normal diet (ND), elevated fish oil diet (n-3 PUFA) and placebo (PLA) diet. Plasma fatty acids were measured at the end of each dietary period only. RESULTS Diet had no effect on pre-exercise pulmonary function in either group and had no effect on post-exercise pulmonary function in control subjects. However, the n-3 PUFA diet improved post-exercise pulmonary function in EIB subjects compared to the ND and PLA diet. FEV1 decreased by 3 ± 2% on n-3 PUFA diet, 14.5 ± 5% on PLA diet and 17.3 ± 6% on ND at 15 min post-exercise. Similar patterns were observed for FVC and PEFR. LTE4, TNF-α, IL-1 β and LTB4 all significantly decreased on the n-3 PUFA diet compared to ND and PLA diet and following the exercise challenge. CONCLUSION These data suggest that high dietary fish oil supplementation has a markedly protective effect in suppressing EIB and this may be attributed to their antiinflammatory properties." @default.
