- W2082400669 abstract "The total excretion of hydroxyproline in children with rheumatoid arthritis, with and without corticosteroid therapy, has been compared with that in a group of normal children of the same age distribution. Children less than 10 years of age with rheumatoid arthritis who were not receiving corticosteroid therapy had normal excretion values, but those who were receiving corticosteroids had a significantly reduced output. In the 10 to 14-year-old age group, there was a significantly lower than normal excretion of hydroxyproline in the nonsteroid treated group, but it was even lower in those receiving corticosteroid therapy. Low hydroxyproline excretion rates correlated well with failure to grow in height. When the daily dose of prednisone was 3 mg. or less, the urinary hydroxyproline excretion was in the range of normally growing children. At this dosage, 8 of 15 children were growing well, more than 2 inches in the preceding year; 5 slowly, 1 to 2 inches in the year; and 2 poorly, less than 1 inch in the year. There was no correlation between urinary hydroxyproline excretion and osteoporosis, or vertebral collapse, as seen on a lateral roentgenogram of the thoracolumbar spine.
