- W2082437320 abstract "The observed connections between sporulation processes of Bacillaceae and formation of antibiotics and other peptides are briefly examined. It is concluded that the production of these compounds is required for or aids a normal sporulation process. A role for the proteases and nucleases formed during the early stages of sporulation is described. An examination of the properties of the many other peptides produced reveals that an ability to modify permeability properties of membranes is common to most. The possibility that this might be used by the organism during the processes of sporulation is examined. Consequently those processes whose completion may be aided by or dependent on modifications to membrane permeability are described together with suggested roles for the antibiotics. These include the accumulation of dipicolinic acid and Ca2+ ions in the cortex, the removal of water from and contraction of the prespore, and the formation of the spore coat layer. Some of the consequences of the hypothesis are examined and a number of simpler ways for testing the hypothesis are briefly described. There is also a discussion of factors which must be considered when attempts are being made to correlate different events in the sporulation processes. It is hoped that the hypothesis will provide a stimulus for a more productive search than hitherto for possible physiological roles for these biologically active peptides in the producing organisms." @default.
