- W2082508769 abstract "Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen's The Freudian Subject is a disturbing, worri some book. The jacket copy says so, and so does Francois Roustang in his brief introduction. Roustang, who has himself a certain reputation as a critic of psychoanalysis, is admirably straightforward both in his sum mary of Borch-Jacobsen's thesis and in the expression of his own concern about it, and he tries repeatedly to phrase adequately his worry for psy choanalytic practice in the face of Borch-Jacobsen's rigour. The first statement of this is the most general and casual: 'With a thinker of Freud's stature, one does not quibble over details: it is better to watch what he does and use the power of his thought in the continuing effort to under stand the many obscure phenomena that he has helped us confront and that he has ultimately restored to the realm of rationality'. But Roustang knows that this 'power' and its relation to 'the realm of rationality' are part and parcel of Borch-Jacobsen's target, and so his foreword closes with two more serious attempts at phrasing the worry:" @default.
