Despite a litany of literature reviews that reach decidedly negative conclusions regarding the utility of facilitated communication (FC) for enhancing the language of autistic children1–8 and policy statements formally adopted by the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, Society of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, American Association on Mental Retardation, and American Academy of Pediatrics echoing this negative verdict,9,10 both Rubin and Rubin and Kliewer et al proclaim without qualification that FC is efficacious. They also take me to task for not reviewing positive research findings on FC.Nevertheless, both sets of letter writers neglect to point out that the studies they cite in support of FC are inadequately controlled and do not permit credible conclusions regarding its efficacy. In particular, most or all of these studies do not ensure the absence of unintentional facilitator influence over autistic individuals' communications.
