- W2082945824 abstract "Forced partial spawning of eggs from gravid specimens of the sea urchin, Arbacia punctulata, stimulates the incorporation of labeled precursors into the RNA of maturing oocytes. Mature eggs containing radioactive RNA can be collected after several days of incubation. Autoradiograms from sectioned gonads show that radioactive eggs are sparsely distributed among the bulk of unlabeled ootids. Smaller oocytes and oogonia, which are not collected for extraction, become highly radioactive. Most of the radioactivity in RNA from mature eggs is found in the 28 s and 18 s ribosomal species, and a smaller and more variable incorporation is observed for the material of low molecular weight sedimenting at about 4 s. The distribution of specific activity in gradient sedimentation profiles and in the pattern of elution from methylated albumin-kieselguhr columns suggests that radioactive heterogeneous RNA may also be present. The total RNA preparations contain some radioactive material, the in vitro hybridization of which with DNA is not appreciably influenced by the presence of excess unlabeled ribosomal RNA." @default.
