- W2082964997 abstract "It was found that fenestrae are about 12 times more frequent at the venous than at the arterial ends of capillaries in jejunal villi of mice. The fenestrae frequently were adjacent to the epithelial cells, while the nuclei were on the opposite sides of the vessels. About three-quarters of fenestrae at the venous ends possessed diaphragms compared with about one-half of those at the arterial ends. It was considered that such arrangements indicate that the fenestrae probably assist in removing large molecules from the tissue; the bulk flow of fluid into the vessels carrying proteins inward, while outward diffusion is prevented. The few fenestrae at the arterial ends may allow some large molecules to reach the tissues more rapidly than via the vesicular system; but there is still likely to be a net removal from the tissues via the fenestrae." @default.
