- W2083081738 abstract "The influence of the contact time and the surface-to-volume ratio (SV) in the reaction zone on pyrolytic carbon formation was investigated during methane pyrolysis in a flow system. The experiments were carried out within the temperature interval of 815–1100°C, the SV ratio ranging from 1·5/cm to 105/cm. It was found that at SV ⩾ 104/cm the homogeneous reaction was depressed, and that the rate of pyrolytic carbon formation was proportional to the surface area. At SV < 20/cm an autoaccelerating period of the reaction was observed. The steady rate of pyrolytic carbon formation related to the surface unit was independent of the SV ratio under conditions of heterogeneous pyrolysis of methane, and was inversely proportional to the SV ratio under conditions of homo-heterogeneous reacting. The rates obtained under the latter conditions were by a factor of 102–103 greater than those obtained under heterogeneous pyrolysis. Results are analyzed on the basis of a kinetic model which postulates a radical mechanism for both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions and transition of radicals from the gas phase to the surface.
