Die Anzahl von freien OH-Gruppen im H2O kann durch Ionenzusatz sowohl erhöht als auch erniedrigt werden entsprechend den Ein- und Aussalzeffekten. Die Diskussion der freien OH-Gruppen vermag die Wirkung der Salzeinflüsse zu deuten und ist der Einführung von Strukturtemperaturen überlegen. From salt effects on aqueous solutions it may be inferred that there is considerable secondary hydration of ions, up to several hundred H2O-molecules per pair of ions. Large secondary hydration numbers of this order are evaluated for the case of poly-ethylene oxide derivatives and it is shown that there are specific differences beetwen ions, analogous to the lyotropic sequence of ions. This sequence also governs the size of the effect of ions on the infrared spectra of H2O. The number of free hydroxyl groups in water can be either increased or decreased by the addition of ions, corresponding to salting-in and salting-out effects. The discussion in terms of free hydroxyl groups permits the interpretation of salt effects and is superior to the introduction of structure temperatures." @default.
