- W2083430306 abstract "Acute hematogenous long-bone osteomyelitis characteristically occurs in children, with Staphylococcus aureus being responsible for more than 90% of cases. Most commonly, the site of infection is the rapidly growing ends of tubular bones. In this article, we review several studies concerned with the epidemiology and pathogenesis of this disease. Microbial factors, mechanisms of bacterial deposition, and host factors involved in pathogenesis are included. The clinical manifestations of hematogeneous osteomyelitis in normal children and in patients in special risk groups are considered. Patients who present with unusual microbial causes of osteomyelitis also are discussed. Clues to the clinical diagnosis are presented in detail, and laboratory tests and radiographic studies helpful in diagnosis and follow-up are presented. The medical treatment of hematogenous osteomyelitis is discussed, including guidelines for the use of sequential parenteral/oral therapy. Finally, a comparision of complication rates from available studies is presented, with the prognosis being generally good." @default.
