- W2083470329 abstract "EDMUND SPENSER’s birth date is unknown. He was born in London, but we do not know his father’s first name. His mother’s first name was Elizabeth. In Amoretti 74 he alludes to his three ‘Elizabeths’ and identifies them as his wife-to-be, Elizabeth Boyle; his mother; and his queen. Since his father’s name was not recorded when he enrolled at Pembroke College, Cambridge, we cannot assess Spenser’s social class. He may have been illegitimate; in sixteenth-century England it was possible to be illegitimate and still achieve status: Thomas Egerton, later Lord Ellesmere and finally the Earl of Bridgewater, was the illegitimate son of a country squire. Spenser, like Ben Jonson, may have had a complicated family background. Jonson was the son of a college-educated clergyman, but his mother’s second husband was a bricklayer. Spenser was a sizar at Cambridge, and so was not wealthy. Because of uncertainty about Spenser’s family background and the absence of a likely documentary record, his birth date has remained conjectural." @default.
