- W2083478968 abstract "Considering her important place within the history of women in medicine in nineteenth-century America and her status as one of America's most important early female physicians, it is surprising that there has been no full-scale study of the life of Mary Putnam Jacobi until now. The medical biography as a genre has always come under attack by medical historians. However, Bittel's study proves that this is a worthwhile means of investigation and that medical biographies can often surpass their simple reputations of being histories of great (wo)men. This study, which expands on Bittel's previous work, not only gives us a deep insight into the life and work of Jacobi but also weaves together several related fields within the history of medicine, such as women's admission to the medical profession and universities, scientific medicine, medical education in Paris and America and the anti-vivisection movement in nineteenth-century America. Mary Putnam Jacobi was born in 1842, the daughter of George Putnam, the New York publisher. In the first chapter, the author traces how the family home provided a supportive environment for the young Jacobi, with her father being a keen supporter of women-writers who often visited the family home and inspired Jacobi. During her teenage years, the family was initiated into the Baptist faith but dissatisfied with Calvinist theology and as a result of her increasing interest in science, Jacobi withdrew from the church in 1863. In 1866, Jacobi left New York for Paris in order to undertake her medical education, like many other American medical students of the period. She successfully gained admission to the Ecole de Medecine, but Paris also set the stage for her political awakening and interests in radical politics of the period which were set to shape her activism in the next three decades of her life in the United States. The second chapter is a valuable contribution to the history of American students in Paris, in particular focusing on the female experience." @default.
