Each fiber encodes only a portion of the full dynamic range of hearing because the fibers show saturation at high sound intensities. Despite this saturation, neurons in the marginal shell of the anteroventral cochlear nucleus (AVCN) that receive inputs from LMSR fibers display monotonically increasing firing rates. Feedback to these neurons from medial olivocochlear (MOC) neurons’ collaterals is hypothesized to contribute to the shell neurons’ unusually wide dynamic ranges. A model system incorporating MOC feedback to an AVCN shell neuron was implemented in GENESIS. The rate-intensity function of the model AVCN shell neuron exhibited a wide dynamic range analogous to experimental observations." @default.
