In air the first member of the series, MnO-Mn2O3, undergoes gradual oxidation of MnO to Mn2O3. With increasing substitution by zinc the oxidation of MnO to Mn2O3 is inhibited. All samples undergo conversion from the β-tetragonal to the γ-cubic crystalline form in the temperature range 1130–1200°C and the oxygen loss is enhanced in nitrogen and by zinc substitution. The introduction of zinc into the hausmannite lattice enhances the stability of the structure and inhibits oxidation." @default.
