- W2083986760 abstract "Purpose To assess the impact of a project to build and promote a rural, but not isolated, seven-mile segment of the Palmetto Trail (the Glenn Springs passage) on the awareness and use of the segment by residents living near the trail. Methods In Aug/Sept 2002, prior to the trail being officially opened, a random-digit dial survey was conducted with adults (18+ years old) living within a defined census block encompassing the trail segment. Data from 207 respondents was collected pertaining to personal demographics; their awareness and use of walking/hiking trails, public recreation centers, playgrounds, sports fields, schools, programs and facilities at places of worship in the community; and their awareness and use of the Palmetto Trail. The survey was repeated one year later with questions assessing the respondents' awareness and use of the seven-mile Glenn Springs segment of the trail added to the survey. Results Complete pre-post data were available for 143 persons. The majority of respondents were 35–54 years old (51%), female (62%), and Caucasian (92%). The percentage of persons using a walking or hiking trail and other physical activity programs and facilities in their community remained constant over the one-year period. However, awareness and use of the Palmetto Trail increased from 46% to 71% and from 6% to 15%, respectively. In addition, awareness of all other community-based physical activity programs and facilities substantially increased by 15%–30% from 2002 to 2003. In 2003, 55% of the respondents stated they were aware of the Glenn Springs passage and 10% indicated that they had used that segment for walking or hiking. Conclusions During the one-year period of study, awareness and use of the Palmetto Trail and awareness of community-based physical activity programs and facilities increased. Increased awareness of the trail seemed to be connected with increased awareness for other community-based physical activity programs and facilities, although a causal relationship cannot be implied. Baseline data for the Glenn Springs passage indicate a higher level of awareness and use of this portion of the trail as compared to awareness and use of the greater Palmetto Trail one year earlier. The increase in use of the Palmetto Trail after one year and the initial higher level of use for the Glenn Springs passage may be related to the overall increase in awareness of trail building occurring in the county and community.
