- W2083988496 abstract "Homma, Wilson, and Siopes [(1972). Science 178, 421–423] demonstrated that the photoperiod experienced via the eyes determines the subsequent gonadal response of blinded Japanese quail to photoperiod. Birds blinded while exposed to short days showed the expected stimulation of gonadal function in response to long days but did not terminate gonadal function when subsequently exposed to short days. Birds blinded while exposed to long days showed gonadal regression when exposed to short days. The results reported here show that the testes of blind and normal house sparrows resond identically to changes from long day to short day photoperiods regardless of the photoperiod experienced prior to the time of blinding. In contrast to Japanese quail, the eyes are not involved either in recrudescence or regression of the testes of house sparrows; extraretinal photoreceptors are solely responsible." @default.
