The luminescence observed is that characteristic of the self-trapped exciton. A calculation of the first and second moments of the photoluminescence spectra indicates that they are comprised of at least two components each of which has its own characteristic temperature dependence. The thermal quenching of the luminescence has been investigated in both zone-refined and non-zone-refined samples. The photoconductivity spectrum shows a strong dependence on previous exposure. In addition, it confirms recent experimental evidence for the existence of a subsidiary valence-band maximum at $ensuremath{Delta}$ which is nearly degenerate with the principal maximum at $L$." @default.
