- W2084202832 abstract "SummaryThis is a review of the present state of knowledge on the avian eosinophil leucocyte. General morphological and cytochemical features of normal andactivated eosinophils have been reviewed together with methods for their stimulation. Comparisons have been made with the mammalian eosinophil where possible.Various light microscope features of avian eosinophils were examined including their cytochemistry and identification in tissues. Studies on spontaneous and experimentally-induced avian eosinophils were discussed. In the latter, multiple intraperitoneal injections of bovine serum albumin produce a greater eosinophilic response than horse serum in the fowl, for example, but the reverse is true in the duck.Studies show that a high proportion of the eosinophils in the peripheral blood of eosinophilic birds have ultrastructural features which differ from those in normal eosinophils. Fowl and quail eosinophil granules exhibit similar morphological changes with many crescentic and vacuolated forms being present. In eosinophilic ducks, the crystalline interna of the specific granules show fragmentation or are either partially or completely lysed. The characteristic lipid droplets of quail eosinophils fuse in many activated cells. Cytochemically, peroxidase activity is generally unaltered in abnormal eosinophils compared with the normal, but the proportion of acid phosphatase and trimetaphosphatase is reduced in many cells, with a large number of granules being non-reactive. Quail eosinophils, which hitherto have been regarded as peroxidase-negative, display strong activity in the lipid droplets of cells from stimulated birds.Agents known to induce delayed hypersensitivity in birds promote a tissue eosinophilic reaction. With the aid of an “indirect” peroxidase technique, eosinophils become conspicuous in the early inflammatory response 30 minutes after challenge which suggests that eosinophils may act as early modulators of inflammation in delayed hypersensitivity responses in the fowl." @default.
