- W2084477897 abstract "There has been widespread public interest in the subject of non-traditional methods of reproduction such as artificial insemination by partner (AI), artificial insemination by donor (AID), and surrogate motherhood (see the report by Wamock, 1984). Surprisingly, there has been little investigation of the nature of people’s responses to these new methods. The British Social Attitudes Survey (see for example Jowell, 1988) asks questions about attitudes to nontraditional parenting. In 1987, researchers found that 89% of people approved of AI, 50% approved of AID, and only 23% approved of surrogacy. Approval was indicated by willingness to have these measures legally available. These figures clearly suggest that the intervention of money in the exchange of genetic material colors people’s attitudes. This raises two interesting economic questions: first, arc people willing to pay for AID, and second, how much are they willing to pay. This study sheds light on these issues, using a combined sample of lesbian and heterosexual women who do not have children. The study’s main contribution is the estimation of a willingness-to-pay equation, which results in a statistically significant positive income elasticity. We could simply present the data without further discussion. However, given the novelty of the subject matter to economists, a discussion of the role of the market in the provision of genetic material is given as background in the next section." @default.
