- W2084610841 abstract "In an attempt to verify and further elucidate the differences found in an earlier study of fibrinolytic activity, a larger study was undertaken on a population more diverse in socioeconomic status. The population consisted of 182 black and 155 white men, aged 20–50 yr all presently employed and living in south-eastern Georgia. The following parameters of fibrinolysis were determined: plasma fibrinolytic activity, fibrinolytic activity of euglobulins, plasminogen in euglobulins, antiplasmin, α-antitrypsin and α2-macroglobulin. Resting whole-plasma fibrinolytic activity was detected in the plasma of 26.6% of blacks and in only 9.3% of whites, this difference being highly significant. Blacks also had higher content of plasminogen in euglobulins. On the contrary, antiplasmin levels were significantly lower in blacks than in whites. While mean values of both α-antitrypsin and α-macroglobulin were lower in blacks than in whites, these differences were not statistically significant. There was no correlation between smoking habits and the fibrinolytic components studied. Blacks, but not whites, demonstrated a decrease in plasma fibrinolytic activity and α-antitrypsin with rise in social class. The results obtained indicate that in a community where the incidence of coronary heart disease has been previously shown to be markedly higher in white than in black men, whites also exhibit a significant impairment of fibrinolysis in comparison with blacks." @default.
