- W2084778630 abstract "Abstract Lanthanum chloride (final concentration 2 mM, concentration of free La3+ ions, 0.96 mM) caused a large increase, within about 10 min, in the frequency of miniature junction potentials in the goldfish fin muscle. The increase in frequency was particularly marked in the middle range of amplitudes. Tetanus toxin was injected into the abductor superficialis muscle of one pectoral fin of goldfish and the same dose of toxin mixed with a just-neutralizing dose of antitoxin was injected into the opposite (control) fin. The toxin abolished almost all of the miniature junction potentials. The effect of lanthanum on the toxin-injected and control muscles was compared. Two hr after lanthanum treatment miniature junction potentials were recorded in the fibres of the toxin-injected muscle, but the maximum frequency of miniature potentials which lanthanum produced was much lower than in the control muscles. The results are interpreted as indicating either that the tetanus toxin acts by reducing the sensitivity of the release mechanism to calcium (and lanthanum) or that it blocks the exocytotic process whereby acetylcholine is released." @default.
