- W2084833702 abstract "Abstract Computerized morphometric studies were carried out on Golgi-impregnated hippocampal neurons within or near the CA3 zone in two human immature brains. One infant was born at 26 weeks of gestational age (g.a.) and survived 4 weeks. The other was born at 30 weeks and survived 1 day. Angles of bifurcation and fiber separations to nodes and terminals were determined from three-dimensional neuronal information obtained by a computer microscope. These parameters are indices of the maturational status of neurons, and therefore variations in them should provide information on the influence of the extrauterine environment upon neuronal development. Preliminary data suggest that extrauterine survival affects dendrites and axons oppositely. For dendrites, extrauterine development appears to have no effect on the location of nodes and terminals as a function of fiber separation; however, there exists a tendency toward lower branch and fission angle values. The branch and fission angles for axons were similar in both infants, but a reduction in the fiber separation to both nodes and terminals was evident in the infant with 4 weeks of extrauterine survival. These data are interpreted as evidence for an accelerated development of hippocampal neurons in the infant born at 26 weeks of g.a. with 4 weeks of survival compared with the infant born at 30 weeks of g.a." @default.
