General experience from the past suggests that the majority of patients with hyperuricemia respond satisfactorily to treatment with uricosuric agents. Despite the fact that there have been few adverse reactions to allopurinol reported to date, there is still the potential danger of xanthine deposition in the urinary tract after prolonged allopurinol administration.
