- W2085256247 abstract "THIS A RTICLE began to take shape between 2000 and 2003, when I made three fieldwork trips to the Estonian islands of Hiiumaa and Kassari in the Baltic Sea. 1 The wilderness of nature preserves, empty beaches, small harbors, fishing villages, old churches, and historical graveyards, and the distance from the mainland, built up a sense of an isolated place, where traditional rural folklore might still be alive. In my interviews with the local people, I noticed that several of them were fascinated by new manifestations of the supernatural, such as sightings of flying saucers, contacts with higher civilizations, healing with energy, and mysterious places in the local landscape that were suitable for meditation or, vice versa, dangerous to visit. My expectation of the possible isolation of these communities was wrong: the beliefs of many islanders merged with a modern New Age worldview. In ad- dition to the modern beliefs that people eagerly discussed during the interviews, I heard legends about haunted houses and memorates that expressed intimate experience with the appearance of the dead. Although ghosts have a long history in Estonian folk beliefs, the atheist atmosphere of official communist ideology concealed this belief until the end of the 1980s. Belief in ghosts was projected to earlier times, when a lack of proper education and a religious worldview sup- posedly made people superstitious. Due to disapproval of such beliefs, issues relating to ghosts and the world of the supernatural were ex- cluded from public discourse and thus remained invisible during the Soviet times. Ghosts apparently manifested their supernatural ability" @default.
