- W2085391714 abstract "Compared to relative intensity values calculated for free atoms, some x-ray lines in solids show a 1–2 order of magnitude enhancement in low Z regions. These lines correspond mainly to quadrupole transitions at higher Z, but when the subshell involved is not completely filled, significant dipole component can occur, which is of higher probability. This fact was known in the 30-ies already, but it was almost forgotten, and revealed once more recently. There are guessings why is it not widely known: (i) the early results failed in assigning the transitions, (ii) the results were published in not too well known journals. The paper shows the enhancement of Kβ5 line around Z=24 (Cr), using experimental values measured in metals. Other lines are mentioned, where similar behavior of the relative intensity was indicated. The significance of the effect for various x-ray analytical methods is presented: The present result is useful for the improvement of the accuracy of trace elemental analysis of 3d transition metals using e.g. PIXE or total reflection x-ray fluorescence (TXRF)." @default.
