- W2085408061 abstract "In early October 1927, Theodore Dreiser, by then fifty-six years old and already world renowned for works such as The Financier (1912), The Titan (1914), and An American Tragedy (1925), received an invitation from the Soviet government to visit Russia for the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Russian Revolution; he remained in the country until January 1928. With the very considerable aid of Ruth Epperson Kennell, a thirty-four-year-old American expatriate living in Moscow who served as his private secretary, guide, translator, companion, and lover for the trip, Dreiser kept a diary of his voyage. He recorded conversations with such Soviet cultural luminaries as Sergei Eisenstein, Vladimir Mayakovsky, and Konstantin Stanislavsky, as well as political leaders such as Karl Radek and Nikolai Bukharin. He also made contact with American radicals in Moscow, including Big Bill Haywood, the American labor militant and a founder of the syndicalist union the International Workers of the World, who had sought refuge in the Soviet Union after numerous run-ins with police and authorities in the United States, and Anna Louise Strong, who in later life (after being expelled from the Soviet Union as a spy) would transfer her loyalties from Soviet Russia to Mao's Communist China." @default.
