Most infections in adults are clinically inapparent. In contrast to earlier assumptions, at present there is good evidence that even in previously healthy adults cytomegalovirus infection can occasionally give rise to a great variety of clinical symptoms. In this issue Jordan and others (p. 153) report interesting clinical and laboratory observations on nine patients with spontaneous cytomegalovirus mononucleosis, who had no history of pre-illness blood transfusions or surgery.
