- W2085688768 abstract "In pursuing its objective to attain a developed country status, Malaysia has embarked on rapid industrialization programs. However, with industrialization comes the problem of pollution. In this regard, the effluent discharges from the palm oil industry contributed to the pollution problem. The palm oil industry plays an important role in the economic development of Malaysia in enhancing the economic welfare of the population. Despite obvious benefits of this industrial development, it also contributes to environmental pollution, both at the input and the output sides of its activities. In order to ensure that the industrialization process does not progress at the expense of the environment, Malaysia has put in place a fee structure to control the level of the palm oil industries effluent discharge and to enhance the development of environmentally sound technology in the disposal of the effluents discharge of the industry. The Environmental Quality Act, 1974, is the principal regulation in Malaysia to prevent, abate, and control pollution. Malaysia is aware from the onset that the command and control mechanism alone is insufficient to address pollution problems in the country. Hence, the Act incorporates provisions containing punitive as well as economic measures for the control of effluents discharge into the environment. Malaysia is committed to continue its focus on sustainable development to support the economic growth, enhanced competitiveness, and contribute toward achieving a balanced development. The strategies outlined include reducing high dependence on petroleum products, increasing use of alternative fuels, promoting greater use of renewable energy for power generation, fostering a more conducive environment to support the implementation of Small Renewable Energy Program (SREP) by reviewing the terms and conditions of the Renewable Energy Power Purchase Agreement (REPPA), and issues related to project viability." @default.
