- W2085689429 abstract "This preliminary review paper examines the incidence of some diseases and causes of death in Australia in relation to climatic factors, or at least to any seasonal or other rhythm. Skin cancers are clearly related to exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which is particularly effective in Australia. There are latitudinal gradients: some acute diseases are more frequent or cause more deaths in the hotter regions, other chronic diseases cause more deaths in the colder regions. The almost traditional summer peak in acute intestinal diseases is now greatly reduced, and persists mostly as a cause of infant mortality. The opposite trend is noticed in pneumonia, which recently caused as many deaths among infants in Western Australia in midsummer as it did in midwinter. However, the higher winter mortality continues over a few months, whereas the high midsummer mortality is limited to a very short period. Arteriosclerosis, hypertensive disease and some heart diseases are related to higher mortality in May and from July (midwinter) onwards; stresses through variations in atmospheric pressure and cold southerly winds are suspected. Probably for this reason, a winter maximum is also found in several other causes of death. Even some causes of admission of mental patients show a faint but distinct seasonal pattern, with more admissions for senility in winter, schizophrenia in spring, alcoholism in summer. In recent years, mortality from bronchitis and major circulatory causes has shown a biennial rhythm which is probably related to an atmospheric oscillation and warrants further study." @default.
