- W2085786703 abstract "RATIONALE: If sensitization and eczema were manifestations of one common underlying phenomenon only, then the influences of environmental and genetic factors should be similar. This was investigated in German preschool children. METHODS: Between 1994 and 2000 unselected children living in predefined areas were asked to participate in a dermatological investigation (Response 70%). Eczema (clinical investigation), sensitization (positive specific IgE against pollen, house dust mite or cat) and risk factors (standardized questionnaire answered by the parents) were determined. Mutually adjusted odd-ratios (OR) and 95% confidence limits (95%CI) were calculated for the association between risk factors and eczema or sensitization. RESULTS: 40% of the 406 children with eczema were sensitized compared to 23% of the 5110 children without eczema. The influences of the following risk factors differed between eczema and sensitization in magnitude and direction: Boys had eczema less often but were more often sensitized (OR (95% CI): 0.7(0.5-0.8)/1.5(1.4-1.8)), children from East Germany had more eczema but were less often sensitized (1.7(1.1-2.2)/ 0.8(0.7-1.0)), eczema was decreasing whereas sensitization was increasing between 1994 and 2000 (0.5(0.3-0.7)/1.2(1.0-1.6)), maternal eczema was related to eczema only (1.8(1.3-2.5)/1.0(0.7-1.3)), whereas parental atopy was more influential for sensitization (1.4(1.1-1.8)/1.9(1.6-2.2)) and children with worm infections had slightly more eczema but were protected against sensitization(1.1(0.7-1.5)/0.7(0.5-0.9)). CONCLUSIONS: Eczema and sensitization are related but some influences of environmental and genetic factors are different. They are more than a manifestation of one common phenomenon." @default.
