- W2085787242 abstract "This paper presents the results of an investigation whose objectives were to determine (1) the effect of barium, cesium, potassium, and sodium additives upon particulate formation in polymer diffusion flames and (2) the mechanisms through which these additives affect the smoke particulate formation process. Tests were conducted in a specially developed test apparatus in which polyethylene samples were burned in a diffusion flame. Nebulized aqueous solutions of the additives were injected into the flame at rates ranging from zero to 2.86 × 10−5 moles/min. Measurements of the total amount of soot produced in these tests indicate that as much as 40% soot suppression could be obtained with some of the additives. Further analyses of transmission electron micrographs of soot samples removed from two locations in the test apparatus indicated that these additives affected soot formation through different mechanisms. Alkali additives appear to suppress particulate coagulation processes in the gas phase, resulting in the formation of a larger number of smaller diameter particles (as compared to the no-additive case). The observed soot reduction is apparently caused by a larger fraction of these particles being oxidized upon passage through the flame region. In contrast, the addition of Ba does not substantially affect the size of the generated particles while reducing the total amount of generated smoke. These observations support arguments advanced in related investigations which have suggested the Ba additives suppress soot production by catalyzing reactions that produce OH radicals which are capable of oxidizing both soot precursors and young soot particles." @default.
