- W2085890476 abstract "The optical correction of aphakia remains problematic for ophthalmologists who perform cataract extraction. Progress in the past few years includes advances in aphakic spectacle design, improvements in conventional hard contact lenses, development of hydrophilic contact lenses and, most recently, a resurgence of interest in the implantation of intraocular lenses. Nevertheless, many aphakic individuals persist in having visual difficulties with spectacle correction, either because of the diminished quality of vision or the presence of monocular aphakia. Other patients do not have the manual dexterity, interest, or patience to insert, remove, or care for contact lenses. Using intraocular lenses does not ameliorate the situation of other aphakic patients whose cataract extraction preceded the re-introduction of intraocular lenses or those patients undergoing cataract extraction whose physicians believe this technique has not yet been proven safe. To find an alternative solution to this problem, we evaluated a silicone contact lens worn continuously on eyes of aphakic patients.
