- W2085983062 abstract "Juvenile Atlantic salmon displayed spring peaks in gill Na+K+-ATPase and SDH activities and chloride cell abundance and size, which were more intense in smolting fish than in parr. Autumn peaks were also observed in the gill Na+K+-ATPase activity of 1+ parr, and in the whole-cell SDH activity of 0+ upper mode and 1+ parr, groups which subsequently underwent smoltification the following spring. The precise patterns differed between fish smolting at 1+ and 2+ years. Sexual maturation in 1+ parr inhibited their spring rises in Na+K+-ATPase and SDH activities during smoltification at 2+ years. It is proposed that each class of juvenile salmon shows a distinct developmental pattern of ionoregulation, and that smoltification occurs at a particular ontogenic stage at which the fish are no longer suited to freshwater life, and so migrate seawards." @default.
