- W2086069247 abstract "The movement of wives and mothers into the labor force has been accompanied by concerns over possible harmful effects for children for marriages for husbands and for women themselves. This chapter 1) provides a statistical overview of the employment patterns for women at different stages of the family life cycle; 2) summarizes the major findings of the causes and consequences of employment trends and 3) describes some of the important issues that require further research. The increase in womens employment during the 1960s and 1970s was different in a fundamental way from that of the 1950s; during the past 2 decades it has been younger women with childrearing responsibilities who have dramatically increased their participation in work outside the home. For a growing number of couples a wifes earnings are an essential component of a familys level of well-being. The group most likely to work outside the home are childless wives aged 25 to 34 whose rate of 85% is almost twice that of wives the same age with preschool children. Women are tending to delay marriage remain in school longer postpone childbearing and continue employment even when they have young children. It is significant how few negative effects have been documented given the diligence with which they have been pursued. In general it is important to focus future research on mechanisms associated with positive outcomes for children. Life cycle stages and economic status should be controlled in studies of marital statisfaction; in studies of child outcomes the childs age and sex and the familys socioeconomic status should be controlled. Useful studies for working parents would be studies of the effects of work scheduling the costs and advantages of employer benefits the effects of different types of child care school and community adaptations that assist working parents and effects of varied levels and types of father involvement." @default.
