- W2086160167 abstract "The corrosion behaviour and the composition of surface films formed on Cu-10 Ni alloy in unpolluted and polluted sea-water have been investigated by XPS. The addition of ferrous sulphate to unpolluted sea-water led to a decrease in the corrosion rate, while the addition of sodium sulphide enhanced the corrosion. Addition of ferrous sulphate to sea-water polluted with 40 ppm Na2S was not found to be beneficial, but instead increased the corrosion. The corrosion rate increased with increasing amounts of FeSO4 in this medium. An XPS study of the film formed in unpolluted sea-water showed the outermost corrosion product to be Cu2O with adsorbed water molecules. Sputtering of this film indicated that the inner film consisted of nickel ions in two different valence states and Cl ions in addition to Cu2O. Addition of 1 ppm FeSO4 to sea-water did not alter the film composition significantly. However, addition of 10 ppm FeSO4 resulted in a film which included a minor amount of cupric species and Ni2O3 in addition to Cu2O on the outermost surface. The film formed on the specimen exposed to sea-water containing 40 ppm Na2S was black in colour and was found to be a mixture of Cu2S and Cu2O. Film composition with the addition of 1 ppm FeSO4 to polluted sea-water was more or less the same as without the addition. However, addition of 10 ppm FeSO4 to polluted sea-water resulted in the film which showed partial conversion of cuprous to cupric oxide and consisted of a significant amount of nickel oxide. The corrosion film in this case was a mixture of Cu2O/CuO, Cu2S/CuS and Ni2O3. Adsorption of moisture was seen on all the specimens. An attempt has been made to correlate the composition of the surface films with the corrosion rates." @default.
