III. A surveyof part of the variable star field MWF 361. Kinman, T. D. ; Wirtanen, C. A. ; Janes, K. A. Abstract Photometric data, positions, and finding charts are given for seventy-seven variables or suspected variables in a field (MWF 361A) centered on l6b22 , - ' (1900) covering 27.3 square degrees. Six of these variables have periods greater than 1 day; the results of a period analysis with an electronic computer are given for the remaining stars of which the majority prove to be RR Lyrae variables. An analysis of the space density along the line of sight is made for the RR Lyrae variables of type ab with amplitudes greater than (Y 75. An extinction (AB) of ()W72 and three cases for the photographic absolute magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars (+O .5, + tWO and + ) are assumed. Space densities are also calculated for the same types of variable in the solar neighborhood for the same three cases of the absolute magnitude. A maximum in the 5 ace density is observed at a distance of 5.4 kpc (if Mpg = +1.0) which corresponds to an axial ratio c/a) of 0.57 for a spheroidal distribution whose semimajor axis (a) in the galactic plane equals 7 kpc and a distance to the galactic center (R0) of 10 kpc. This axial ratio is similar to that found by Schmidt for globular clusters. The axial ratio is unknown for variables close to the galactic center and should be determined before a precise value of R0 can be obtained from space densities 6f RR Lyrae stars near the center. The absence of a maximum in the space densities of red stars observed by Wallerstein near NGC 6356 is likely to be due to the lack of homogeneity in the sample of stars which he observed. A comparison of the periods and amplitudes of type ab variables in MWF 361A with those in globular clusters and those observed spectroscopically by Preston suggests that the spectral-class index As > 4 for the variables in MWF 361A. The shortest period found in a sample of type ab variables increases with the distance (z) of the sample from the galactic plane; this effect is probably associated with decreasing metal content. Provisionally it is suggested that M3-type variables predominate for 1 < z < 10 kpc and co Cen-type variables predominate for z> 10 kpc. The number of low-amplitude (< (Y 75) variables increases with increasing z, and this will lead to a error in a comparison of space densities of regions of widely different z in the sense that the densities at large z are underestimated.
