- W2086240332 abstract "Vertebrate muscles reply upon at least four mechanisms for up‐regulating the capacities for oxygen flux from blood to mitochondria: (i) improved capillarity, (ii) intracellular myoglobin, (iii) intracellular lipids, and (iv) subsarcolemmal localization of mitochondria, often concentrated near capillaries. Cephalopod muscles are known to be missing at least two of these. The lack of an intracellular myoglobin analogue and the localization of mitochondria exclusively in interfibrillar zones, with no subsarcolemmal mitochondria at all, suggests that evolutionary selective pressures would favor a muscle metabolism in cephalopods that maximized the ATP yield per mole of oxygen consumed. This hypothesis predicts that cephalopod muscle mitochondria would display preference for fuels such as carbohydrates and amino acids, whose oxidation uses oxygen efficiently (when expressed in terms of ATP yield). On the other hand, fuels such as free fatty acids, whose oxidation uses oxygen inefficiently, would not be favored substrates for cephalopod mitochondria. Available data are consistent with the hypothesis. Key words: Cephalopodmetabolic efficiencycephalopod muscle" @default.
