- W2086382005 abstract "I’ve read this book with interest, from end to end. It is fascinating, well-written and lively and makes the reader question his assumptions and procedures. It is of course based on the new classification of epilepsy published in 2001 and very welcome for that, although the author is not afraid to say when he disagrees with the new classification particularly when he feels it is underinclusive of syndromes. I found this book refreshingly honest even though I didn’t agree with all of it. At the moment epileptic syndromes are more commonly found in children (although, possibly, not for much longer) and obviously will eventually be much more securely based on genetic and structural evidence than they are now. But what happens when apparent different genes appear to produce the same syndrome? Do we have separate syndromes for each? And what happens when we have an apparent unitary syndrome but only half the patients have clear genetic evidence of causation and the other half do not: is it the same syndrome? Perhaps this book is a little premature, but it contains a wealth of valuable and irreplaceable experience. Every person with an interest in epilepsy should read it." @default.
